This course teaches geography and history on a continent-by-continent basis. The student learns about the major countries on each continent, as well as the basics of the continent’s history, geography, and culture. This is not a textbook. It is a series of questions that the student must research in order to answer. Plenty of resources (available in most public libraries) are listed to help the student in his or her research, and the teacher’s edition has all of the answers. Thus, even if the student cannot find the answer, you will not be lost. The pages in the student book are all three-hole punched and perforated so that the student can fill out the worksheets and compile a notebook which will document his or her work.

The great thing about this curriculum is that it written with a multilevel approach! There are questions for students of all levels, and those levels are clearly marked in the curriculum. As a result, the youngsters can do some of the research, the older students can do different research, and the oldest students can answer the most challenging questions. This is truly a curriculum that your whole family can study at once!

Apologia - Exploring Creation with Zoology 2: Swimming Creatures of the Fifth Day

# EXP-SCI04
 Apologia
 #ISBN# 1-932012-73-7

by Jeannie K. Fulbright

Apologia's newest elementary science book will take you and your family on an exploration into the wonders of the swimming creatures made on the fifth day of Creation.   From the rivers and streams to the mighty ocean, God filled the Earth's waters with animals great and small.  From the microscopic to massive, no stone is left unturned in your student's passage through the waters of the world.

The creatures your student studies will come to life as your student creates replicas of them and adds them to his Ocean box - a miniature hand-crafted aquarium.  As always, each lesson ends with an experiment or project reinforcing the scientific method and the concepts studied.

Among other experiments and projects, your student will try on blubber, investigate a shark's ability to sense electrical currents, explore how whales can hear sounds that come from far away, and learn through experimentation which creatures make the best fossils.  No matter how near or far you live from the ocean, you and your students will wonder at God's design in the amazing aquatic animals He formed and fashioned on the fifth day. Apologia - Exploring Creation with Physical Science 2nd Edition - Set

# EXP-SCI013
 Apologia
 #ISBN# 193201280X

by Dr. Jay L. Wile

This should be the last course a student takes before high school biology. It is typically recommended that the student take this course during the same year that he or she is taking prealgebra. Exploring Creation With Physical Science provides a detailed introduction to the physical environment and some of the basic laws that make it work. The fairly broad scope of the book provides the student with a good understanding of the earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, and lithosphere. It also covers details on weather, motion, Newton's Laws, gravity, the solar system, atomic structure, radiation, nuclear reactions, stars, and galaxies.

The second edition of the physical science course has several features that enhance the value of the course:

  • There is more color in this edition as compared to the previous edition, and many of the drawings that are in the first edition have been replaced by higher-quality drawings.
  • There are more experiments in this edition than there were in the previous one. In addition, some of the experiments that were in the previous edition have been changed to make them even more interesting and easy to perform.
  • Advanced students who have the time and the ability for additional learning are directed to online resources that give them access to advanced subject matter.
  • To aid the student in reviewing the course as a whole, there is an appendix that contains questions which cover the entire course. The solutions and tests manual has the answers to those questions.

Because of the differences between the first and second editions, students in a group setting cannot use both. They must all have the same edition. A further description of the changes made to the second edition courses can be found in the sidebar on page 32.

Format: 2 volume set. The first book, hardbound, is the student text, which contains all student material, 'on your own' questions and solutions, laboratory exercises, and module study guides. Color photos and illustrations. The second book, softbound, is the solutions and tests manual, which contains answers to module study guides, tests, and test solutions. Shrink-wrapped with the solutions and tests manual is a booklet containing an extra set of tests.

This course is designed to be a student's first systematic introduction to the sciences.  The course covers topics like the history of science, scientific method, designing experiments, simple machines, archaeology, geology, paleontology, biology, and human anatomy and physiology.  Therefore, its scope is quite wide.  There are many hands-on experiments to do, and they all use household items.  The second edition of our general science course has several features that enhance the value of the course:

  • Scientific advances in the relevant topics have altered how some of the material is covered.  For example, the primary function of the human appendix wasn't determined until 2006.  Thus, while the primary function of the appendix is not discussed in the first edition, it is discussed in this edition.
